Gwendolyn Alker holds a PhD in Performance Studies, a field that interrogates human culture through performances, rituals and artistic creations. She is currently the Director of the Theatre Studies Program in the Department of Drama at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. At NYU she teaches about performance, identity, and embodied anatomy, and is also a dramaturge, writer and editor.
As a yogi, Gwendolyn began studying with Jimmy Reale on Block Island in the early 1990s, and has been a student of Susan Littlefield since she began teaching on the Island. Gwendolyn earned her 200 hour certification in 1999 at Kripalu, holds certifications from White Lotus, and has worked with many yoga and anatomy teachers including Ana Forrest, John Friend, Genny Kapuler, Stephen Cope, Irene Dowd, and Judith Lasater. Since 2000 she has been a Yoga Alliance registered teacher, teaching at various studios and gyms in NYC and at Elevation Studio on Block Island since 2007. Most recently she earned her Pre-Natal Yoga certification from Living Now Yoga in January of 2022.
